General Election Highlights
Concerns that aided in the call to action for women’s health rights when voting in Nevada during the election of 2008 included the following:
- One third of women are unable to afford birth control.
- One in six women and children don't have health insurance.
- Nevada has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country.
- Five health clinics in Nevada serve over 35,000 clients each year.
- Planned Parenthood education and reproductive health care services do more to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, and therefore the need for abortions, than any other organization in the state.
- NAPPA lobbies to ensure that women can see a doctor when they need to and to be sure our teens have the information they need to stay healthy and safe and make responsible decisions.
Voters were asked to consider all at stake and volunteer efforts to make a difference leading up to Election Day. Efforts included signing up to participate with NAPPA for events where information on women’s health could be shared at rallies and other public events in Nevada. Other efforts also included the giving of charitable donations, phone banking, as well as even writing letters newspapers to gather attention on all efforts of NAPPA for the state of Nevada.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed federal candidates who were passionate advocates for women's rights. Candidates selected by NAPPA to represent the rights of women had received a 100 percent rating and were endorsed for their strong records in fighting for women’s health. Selected candidates were the following:
For President of the United States:
Nevada Congressional Races:
- Shelley Berkley (D), incumbent for Congressional District 1
- Jill Derby (D) for Congressional District 2 (opposing incumbent Dean Heller (R) 0% rating)
- Dina Titus (D) for Congressional District 3 (opposing incumbent Jon Porter (R) 0% rating)
Of those selected candidates, 28 were elected to both state and national offices.
Nevada is a pro-choice state!
